Diamond Receives Forest Stewardship Council Certification from the Rainforest Alliance

Diamond Packaging has earned Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program. This certification reflects a growing trend in the paper and printing industry of companies making more environmentally and socially responsible supply chain decisions.Diamond Packaging has earned Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program. This certification reflects a growing trend in the paper and printing industry of companies making more environmentally and socially responsible supply chain decisions.

The FSC is the global standard-setter in responsible forest management. Chain-of-Custody certification guarantees that wood that comes from certified, responsibly managed forestlands is tracked throughout the supply chain, from the forest to the consumer. Conscientious consumers can look for the FSC logo on wood products to know they are supporting forest management that protects biodiversity and supports local communities.

“FSC certification demonstrates our continued commitment to environmental responsibility,” said Dennis Bacchetta, director of marketing at Diamond Packaging. “By utilizing paperboard sourced from responsibly managed forests, we can help businesses empower consumers to make more sustainable choices.”

FSC certification is an extension of Diamond’s greenbox initiative, the company’s commitment to research, design, and implement packaging solutions that are innovative and sustainable. The initiative balances business with environmental considerations by promoting sustainability in all aspects of package production.

The core of Diamond’s greenbox initiative – designs, materials, and methods – represents a comprehensive approach to packaging that minimizes environmental impact throughout the supply chain.

“We are very pleased to award FSC certification to Diamond Packaging,” said Dave Bubser, U.S. region manager at SmartWood. “Diamond’s commitment to integrate core principles of social and environmental sustainability into their packaging operations, combined with the potential to put the FSC’s seal of responsibility in front of millions of consumers provides Diamond with a powerful opportunity to differentiate themselves and their customers while at the same time making a positive impact on the environment.”

About 40 percent of all commercially traded timber globally is used to produce paper, according to the FSC. And paper consumption is expected to grow by about 50 percent in the next few years. The U.S. is the biggest market for paper products globally, producing 90 million tons of paper and consuming 100 million tons of paper each year, according to the FSC.

The paper and printing industry have made big strides recently in focusing on responsible supply chain decisions. In the past few years, several hundred pulp providers, mills, merchants and printers globally have obtained FSC certification. Companies such as Nordstrom, Inc.; Williams-Sonoma, Inc.; and Limited Brands (the parent company of Victoria’s Secret) have all begun using FSC-certified paper in their catalogs and other printed materials. Also, the Rainforest Alliance worked with Scholastic Inc. on using FSC-certified paper in the initial US printing of the final Harry Potter book. At 22 million pounds, it was the largest single purchase of FSC-certified paper to date.

FSC certification ensures that forestry operations meet a set of environmental, social and economic criteria covering compliance with laws and international treaties, land-use and indigenous peoples’ rights, community relations, biodiversity conservation and maintenance of high conservation value forests, among other things.

The area of FSC-certified forestlands has nearly doubled in the past three years to a total of 276 million acres to date. This growth has opened up a burgeoning supply of certified wood products including lumber, paper, furniture and decking from responsibly managed forests. Increasing consumer interest in FSC-certified products ensures that forest operations have economic incentives to manage their lands responsibly.

The Rainforest Alliance, an international nonprofit conservation organization, is the world’s leading certifier of forestlands to the FSC standards. To date, the organization has certified 131 million acres of forestland. The Rainforest Alliance works with businesses in making more responsible choices by using market forces to protect our natural resources and support workers and local communities.

Diamond Strikes a Chord with McGraw Fans

Coty Inc., one of the world’s largest and most successful beauty companies, recently introduced McGraw by Tim McGraw, a new fragrance that captures the spirited personality of the renowned actor and country music star. Diamond Packaging was chosen to design and manufacture the cartons for this exciting product launch.Coty Inc., one of the world’s largest and most successful beauty companies, recently introduced McGraw by Tim McGraw, a new fragrance that captures the spirited personality of the renowned actor and country music star. Diamond Packaging was chosen to design and manufacture the cartons for this exciting product launch.

Coty’s expertise in developing products that resonate with consumers is enhanced by aligning themselves with celebrities who are involved with the entire creative process. Diamond worked closely with the Coty design team from the beginning, ensuring that the packaging reflected the celebrity’s personality and style.

Diamond delivered by creating a package inspired by McGraw’s modern appeal.

The French reverse tuck carton features a combination of foil stamping and embossing that augments the graphic design and creates a unique visual and tactile presentation.

The entire carton was offset printed with UV matte black and UV metallic silver ink in-line with a UV dull, stampable varnish, prior to being embossed with a pebble grain leather pattern.

Subtle accents, including a custom-designed silver embossed guitar pick on the top panel and an embossed, braided rope pattern around the perimeter of the carton, tie the brand to the iconic star.

The result is a packaging design that delivers impact at the retail environment and captures the essence of the country music legend.

New Processes Provide Decorative Options - part one

Technological advancements in the cold foil process, new UV processes such as Cast and Cure, and specialty laser cutting technology are just part of what is now available to create spectacular designs that can stand on their own or enhance printed material such as cartons, greeting cards, invitations, folders, and much more.As we move well into the first decade of the 21st century, a great deal has changed in how the printed sheet can be enhanced and protected through specialty decorating processes. The emergence of new decorating processes, coupled with innovative application processes, has prompted the move by the Foil Stamping & Embossing Association to change its name to the Foil & Specialty Effects Association.

Technological advancements in the cold foil process, new UV processes such as Cast and Cure, and specialty laser cutting technology are just part of what is now available to create spectacular designs that can stand on their own or enhance printed material such as cartons, greeting cards, invitations, folders.

Sheet-Fed Cold Foil Technology

Although cold foil is not brand new to the marketplace, the technology to apply it has become more reliable in the past few years and has become very popular in the narrow-web flexographic market for many label applications. Where it has seen more recent growth has been with the application of cold foil in-line with large format sheet-fed presses. This technology utilizes a tacky adhesive that is applied in the first printing head of a sheet-fed printer. The foil is nipped to the adhesive and the foil carrier is stripped away, thereby applying the foil only where the clear adhesive is laid down. Press manufacturers are offering this technology on new presses and there are retrofit units on the market for existing presses.

Although the trade foil stamper may look at this process as a competitive one to conventional foil stamping, it has much more effect on metalized board or paper that is overprinted. The cost of applying the cold foil to a standard carton stock and then overprinting the foil can be more cost effective than using metalized board for many applications. For applications where foil is utilized in just certain areas of the sheet or carton, even if overprinting is involved, traditional methods of hot stamping the foil and then overprinting is more cost effective. Foil usage with the cold foil process is one-to-one with the substrate. So, the foil pull must run the same length as the sheet and is not indexed as with conventional hot foil units. In addition, applying cold foil in-line on a sheet-fed press is best suited for coated stocks and does not perform as well on dry, porous stocks. Lastly, it must be pointed out that the cold foil technology does not provide the overall brilliance that can be achieved with applying foil through traditional hot stamping methods. So, there are limitations that will continue to keep traditional foil stamping a viable option for all types of applications.

Foil Fusing Technology

It is well known that special foils can be fused to toner image areas that have been imprinted with a laser printer. Using traditional foil fusing equipment with heated rollers, foil fusing is useful for proofs and small quantity orders but is not suitable for applying foil in production applications. Therm-O-Type has introduced a new foil fusing technology called High Speed Foil Fusing (HSFF) that increases the utility of the foil fusing process. The HSFF process solves speed, paper surface finish, and foil waste limitations associated with traditional foil fusing. With the new technology installed on a Therm-O-Type NSF press, foil can be fused to paper without the use of traditional dies at speeds up to 4,000 impressions per hour. HSFF can be used to apply not only metallics but also, pigment and holographic pattern foils. Special makeready and foils are required for the HSFF process. Foil presses can switch easily from flat foil stamping and foil embossing with traditional dies to the HSFF process in just a few minutes. High Speed Foil Fusing can be an excellent alternative for adding foil to graduation name cards, announcements, invitations, business cards, and greeting card personalization.

In Part Two we'll explore Coating and Laminating Effects and Laser Cutting.
