Diamond Packaging Wins Four Awards in 2009 FSEA Gold Leaf Awards Competition

Awards were announced last month at the FSEA National Convention in New Orleans, LA.

The competition, sponsored by the Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA), recognizes top quality craftsmanship and expressions of excellence in the areas of foil stamping, embossing, specialty effects, and design. Entries are judged on several criteria including design, execution, and level of difficulty. Winning an award is a mark of excellence in the packaging field and recognition of superior achievement.

Competing against hundreds of entries from around the world, Diamond earned recognition by winning two Gold Leaf awards, one Silver Leaf award, and one Bronze Leaf award.

Diamond won a Gold Leaf award in the category of “Most Difficult Application of Foil Stamping/Embossing on a Folding Carton” for packaging created for BHPC Fragrances’ Beverly Hills Polo Club Classic, a contemporary, subtle fragrance reflective of the casual and elegant California lifestyle.

The French reverse tuck carton features a textured Black Vat Dyed paperboard complemented by gold and red hot foil stamped accents, creating a carton with visual and tactile impact.

Diamond also won a Gold Leaf award in the category of “Best Use of Finishing Processes Combined with Sustainable Materials” for its 2010 corporate calendar, a popular promotional item given to customers and prospects.

This year's surfing theme features images of a vintage 1960's-era VW bus and surfboards, decorated with the latest in package printing technologies. The overall presentation imparts unusual depth and distinction by combining innovative structural design with specialty printing and finishing techniques. It also demonstrates Diamond’s expertise in sustainable packaging design, through right sizing, material selection, and the use of MiraFoil® coating.

The header is highly decorated with UV gloss spot coating, flat foil stamping (logo and VW bus trim accents), holographic foil stamping (water), and multi-level embossing (VW bus and surfboard).

The backers were die cut in the shape of three different surfboard styles and enhanced with MiraFoil®, an environmentally-friendly specialty metallic coating. MiraFoil® is an economical, in-line alternative to foil stamping which uses no heavy metals and results in less material and energy usage compared to an off-line foil stamping process.

Diamond re-sized the backers, calendar pages, and shipper compared to previous years to reduce its environmental impact. Reducing the overall calendar weight offered the most significant opportunity to conserve raw materials and energy, reduce greenhouse gases, and minimize discards. This year’s calendar weighs between 17-57% less than calendars in recent years.

Other winning highlights include a Silver Leaf Award for Coty’s new Southern Blend by Tim McGraw fragrance, decorated with a custom-designed gold foil embossed guitar pick and an overall embossed cork pattern, and a Bronze Leaf Award for US CosmeceuTechs’ Priori™ Idebenone Superceuticals® carton featuring foil stamping and debossing.

Diamond Designs Are Bliss

Bliss ignited a modern spa revolution by combining a clever menu of super-effective services and a fun, 'no-attitude' atmosphere. The company turned to Diamond for an innovative approach that would deliver stylistic and functional improvements over competing designs.

The holiday collection includes the Best of Bliss 2009 box set and single and multi-carriers for three of their most popular products (body butter, soapy suds, and hand cream) in distinctive packaging with brand-identified colors. The company sought to create an eye-catching holiday campaign that captures the essence of the brand and maximizes its retail presence at Sephora and Bliss Spas worldwide.

Diamond produced inspired packaging for the collection, which includes one large and four small carriers/straight tuck cartons with a tented fifth panel, and a straight tuck carton with a printed insert.

The carriers’ unique structural design maximizes billboard space and product visibility, and eliminates the need for a separate insert. The tent structure also keeps bottles secure and prevents them from falling forward.

The straight tuck carton’s paperboard insert/tray creates a “floating effect” and eliminates the need for a separate thermoform insert used in previous versions. Tucking the dust flaps into notches in the paperboard insert/tray prevents the products from falling into the front panel or window, all without increasing the blank size or make-ready, or decreasing run speeds.

The cartons were offset printed with three PMS colors followed by an overall UV gloss coating and inside printed with one PMS color (two hits) in-line with an overall aqueous coating.

The holiday-themed graphics were enhanced and complemented by decorative foil stamping on the front panels.

The result is a product promotion that delivers impact in the retail environment and projects a fun, fashion-forward image for the company.

About Cast and Cure

Cast and Cure is another key component of Diamond's Green Chic™ packaging model, which delivers “Beauty without Compromise” by capturing the essence of luxury brands while communicating an environmentally-friendly image and awareness.

Cast and Cure technology is a cost effective, inline process that produces high-gloss, holographic finishes through the use of UV coatings and specialty film.

The Cast and Cure process utilizes a specialty film with a micro-embossed holographic pattern. Once the UV coating is applied, the film is laid over the top of the sheet. With the film still applied, the sheet runs through the UV dryer and is cured. The film is rewound, leaving the holographic effect on the sheet. Because there is no actual transfer of a foil or material onto the substrate, the film can be reused several times before new film is needed.

More Sustainable Benefits

Cast and Cure enhances the brilliance of your printed surface while delivering more sustainable benefits:

  • Cost effective, inline decorative process
  • Produces high-gloss, holographic finishes through the use of UV coatings and specialty film
  • Economical alternative to holographic foil stamping
  • Can be more efficient than holographic foil stamping, depending on design (less material and energy usage compared to an off-line foil stamping process)
  • Spot or overall coating options
  • No film or laminate is left on the sheets
  • UV coating process emits no VOCs
  • Casting film is reusable
  • Casting film is recyclable
