Diamond Earns Four Awards in PPC Competition

Diamond Packaging earned four awards in the 64th Annual National Paperboard Packaging Competition, the industry’s premier showcase for all that is new and outstanding in paperboard packaging design and technology. Awards were announced at the Annual Spring Meeting & Strategies Conference, held March 6-8, 2007 in Nashville, TN.

The competition, which is sponsored by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), provides members with an opportunity to display their most impressive packaging designs and productions, and promote winning packages to customers. Entries are judged in 26 different categories against three criteria: folding carton impact, manufacturing and distribution impact, and retail consumer impact. Entries are also considered for technical achievement and innovation, craftsmanship and overall appearance.

Competing against hundreds of entries from around the country, Diamond Packaging received recognition by winning one Gold Award and three Excellence Awards.

Diamond won the first-ever Gold Award in Combination Materials, a new category that recognizes the trend towards combining paperboard with alternative materials such as plastic.

Diamond’s new Diamondessence™ combination packaging incorporates a wide variety of styles and materials that truly set products apart from their competition by revealing the beauty of what's inside. Packaging that inspires. Packaging that sells.

The wrap-around window structure combines package integrity with maximum product visibility by showcasing a diamond as if it floats in mid-air. To achieve even greater shelf impact, techniques such as hot foil stamping, embossing, and specialty coating were also employed.

Diamond won an Excellence Award in the Personal Care category for the Redken for Men Bulk Up Thickening Spray counter display.

Diamond created a counter display for Redken that instantly draws consumers’ attention. The geometrically-inspired design combines a trapezoid shape with straight lines to convey a sense of dynamic energy. The inverted weight of the main panel contributes by visually communicating the sense of “bulking up”.

The fifth-panel structure integrates with the base on which the spray bottle is displayed, encouraging consumers to touch and hold the product. The stunning graphics, which were achieved by offset printing four-color process inks and one special color ink in-line with UV matte varnish, perfectly complements the color of the spray bottle.

Diamond also employed frequency modulated (FM) screening to deliver near photographic fidelity from an offset printing process. FM screening is unique in that it varies the number of dots used, as opposed to amplitude modulated (AM) screening, which varies the size of the dot. The 20-micron FM dot eliminates all issues related to screen angles, resulting in smoother vignettes and softer color-to-color transitions not possible with traditional four-color process printing.

Other winning highlights include a Halloween collection enhanced with specialty coating techniques for Godiva Chocolatier, and a 1950’s retro themed self-promotional calendar.

Many of the PPC competition winners will be featured in articles promoting paperboard packaging, while others will be displayed at various tradeshows and conferences or used in PPC advertisements throughout the year.

Since 1911, Diamond Packaging has dedicated itself to providing the highest standard of quality, innovation and cost effective packaging for companies including Bausch & Lomb, Beiersdorf, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Coty, Godiva Chocolatier, Procter & Gamble, and L’Oreal USA. Diamond Adds Brilliance to Launch (case study)

Diamond Adds Brilliance to Launch (case study)Brilliantwhite™ is a new, radical breakthrough in dental research and development, formulated to achieve improved oral health and an unprecedented degree of whiteness. Livingston-Short Hills Dental Associates, Inc, turned to Diamond Packaging to create a family of cartons that conveyed the product’s message of delivering a luminous, radiant smile.

The Brilliantwhite™ Professional Smile Tooth Whitening System was created by a noted cosmetic dentist and formulated by leading chemists with advanced ingredient technology. Diamond's task was to design packaging that captures the essence of the brand and attracts consumer and professional attention in marketplace.

Diamond delivered by utilizing structural and graphic techniques to create cartons that both functionally and stylistically surpasses any other similar products on the market.

The Step 1 (ActiGel™) and Step 2 (ActiWhite™) product cartons were designed with notch locks on the bottom closures due to weight considerations. The kit carton was designed with a reinforced auto bottom, and features a glued inner cell to keep all three products separated.

Invercote G paperboard was selected as it is designed for products and prestige packaging where an exceptional aesthetic result is desired. The printing side of Invercote G is triple coated and finished to a matte level, resulting in a very bright white printing surface perfect for conveying the image of the product.

The subtle graphics were achieved by printing a single color (PMS# 286) with a special effects pigmented aqueous pearl coating. The blue-pigmented “Interference Coating” enhances the color of the ink and adds color shifting properties. The cartons were overcoated with stamp-able UV gloss coating, and then hot stamped with silver foil to enhance the overall graphic presentation.

The combination of ink, coating, and stamping perfectly conveyed the product’s message of delivering a luminous, radiant smile.

The result is a promotional carton that captures the essence of the product, and delivers impact in the consumer and professional environment.

Designing With Foil - part 3
by FSEA

Designing With Foil - part 3 by FSEAThis segment is the third in a three-part series that will discuss areas of production where the design of a piece directly impacts cost, quality, and the overall success of the job.

Foil Stamping Over Ink

If you are going to apply hot stamping foil over a printed area, there is one basic rule to remember – the printer must use wax free inks. Standard inks used by the printer often have a great deal of wax for protection and drying. When the heat of the foil die heats the printed sheet, the wax melts and makes it almost impossible to foil stamp. Also, make sure the printer does not use rubber-based inks, which virtually never dry on the sheet and will not allow foil to adhere to the sheet. Wax free inks are readily available to all printers.

Color selection of ink is another area to consider when designing a piece. Some inks dry more slowly than others, namely reflex blue, violets – basically any colors with high contents of cobalt in them – and process black. If using these colors in your designs, be aware that extra time will be needed to properly dry the sheets before foil stamping, especially if there is medium to heavy ink coverage. In addition, if you are using black in your design, do not build the black out of CMYK. This also can cause drying issues. Instead, build the black out of a single hit of process black and if desired, build a slight screen of blue behind the black to achieve a richer, deeper black.

Printing Over Foil

Overprinting hot stamping foil is the process where you foil stamp first, then overprint the foiled image. The registration of the 4-color lithography over the foil is very critical; therefore, the designer must make sure the same film or digital file is used to create the engraving and the printing plates to ensure correct registration. This has become popular with refractive and stamping for greeting cards, paperback books, and packaging applications.
