Diamond Packaging Installs Custom-Configured Speedmaster XL 105 UV Press

Diamond Packaging recently announced the installation of a state-of-the-art, UV-capable, 8-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 in a special double coating configuration with initial flexo dispersion coater and three modular deliveries.Diamond Packaging recently announced the installation of a state-of-the-art, UV-capable, 8-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 in a special double coating configuration with initial flexo dispersion coater and three modular deliveries. The company acquired the new press in order to service existing customers, attract new business, and grow revenues and employment. The new machine joins a pressroom lineup that already boasts a 7-color Speedmaster CD 102 UV press and a 6-color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 UV press with double coater.

“Packaging is a very capital intensive business. Our customers are continually demanding new technology, faster turnaround, increased service, and greater flexibility and capability,” said Karla Fichter, CEO of Diamond Packaging. “Investing in new technology is a long-standing tradition at Diamond and allows us to satisfy the demands of our customers and grow organically.”

“This acquisition is exciting in that it represents the state-of-the-art in package printing technology,” said Kirsten Werner, president of Diamond Packaging. “Our new press will provide Diamond with an unprecedented combination of cost innovation and sustainability.”

Diamond financed the acquisition with an award from the Upstate (NY) Regional Blueprint Fund, along with a combination of SBA 504 funds approved through the Monroe County Industrial Development Corporation, bank financing, and cash equity. Commencing with the installation of the new Speedmaster XL 105, Diamond Packaging further advances its reputation for outstanding customer service, based on the XL 105’s game-changing technology.

The custom arrangement of coating and drying units on the new Speedmaster XL 105 grants the multi-award-winning company an ability to produce high-gloss applications with dispersion or other coatings, in addition to gold, silver or other special effects increasingly in demand from Diamond’s discerning customers in the cosmetic, health and personal care, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and food and confectionery industries. From the high-performance Prinect Press Center control station to the Prinect Inpress Control inline color and register control system, to the optimized Preset Plus feeder and extended delivery, the Peak Performance Speedmaster XL 105 enables users to meet most exacting customer requirements for quality and productivity at speeds to 18,000 sph in UV or conventional modes.

“Diamond Packaging continues to entrust its reputation for innovation and excellent customer service to Heidelberg technology,” said Clarence Penge, Sheetfed Product Manager for Heidelberg USA. “We’re confident the Speedmaster XL 105 will very quickly become a cornerstone of the company’s continued success.”

Diamond a Natural Fit for Zotos

Zotos continues to lead the charge to reduce long-term ecological impact within the professional hair care industry. The company recently asked Diamond Packaging, a leader in innovative and sustainable packaging solutions, to design and manufacture environmentally-friendly cartons for its line of hair color products.Zotos continues to lead the charge to reduce long-term ecological impact within the professional hair care industry. The company recently asked Diamond Packaging, a leader in innovative and sustainable packaging solutions, to design and manufacture environmentally-friendly cartons for its line of hair color products.

Since making ecological sustainability a key goal, Zotos has prioritized the use of recyclable materials and post-consumer recycled (PCR) resins, with the end goal of reducing landfill volume. As part of this initiative, Zotos has taken steps to reduce its global footprint through the use of biodegradable packaging, including folding cartons.

The packaging for Zotos hair color products, including Vero K-PAK® Hair Color, Vero K-PAK® Hair Chrome, re:nu Age Defy, Color Fix for Men, ISO i.color, and ISO i.luminate, needed to reflect the company’s emphasis on environmental solutions.

To better understand the customer’s requirements, members of Diamond’s Green Team visited Zotos’ fulfillment center to review paperboard options and assess the compatibility with their existing filling equipment.

The cartons were converted from solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard to .016 WCCN recycled board, resulting in saving 2725 pulp trees. The 100% recycled paperboard contains an average of 35% post consumer waste (PCW) and features a smooth printing surface, ideal for eye-catching graphic reproduction. The smooth texture of the aqueous-coated board also contributes to problem free operation on the filling lines.

The cartons were manufactured using 100% wind energy. Based upon the total projected annualized output, the environmental benefit of using wind energy during production of the packaging is equal to offsetting approximately 68 metric tons of carbon dioxide, the impact of which is equivalent to planting 61 acres of trees or not driving 157,973 miles.

All cartons feature on-pack eco visuals, including a “Carton made with 100% wind energy” logo.

Diamond leveraged its expertise in green solutions to create new packaging that demonstrates Zotos' commitment to the environment.

Cast and Cure Holographic Effects

About Cast and Cure

Cast and Cure is another key component of Diamond's Green Chic™ packaging model, which delivers “Beauty without Compromise” by capturing the essence of luxury brands while communicating an environmentally-friendly image and awareness.

Cast and Cure technology is a cost effective, inline process that produces high-gloss, holographic finishes through the use of UV coatings and specialty film.

The Cast and Cure process utilizes a specialty film with a micro-embossed holographic pattern. Once the UV coating is applied, the film is laid over the top of the sheet. With the film still applied, the sheet runs through the UV dryer and is cured. The film is rewound, leaving the holographic effect on the sheet. Because there is no actual transfer of a foil or material onto the substrate, the film can be reused several times before new film is needed.

More Sustainable Benefits

Cast and Cure enhances the brilliance of your printed surface while delivering more sustainable benefits:

  • Cost effective, inline decorative process
  • Produces high-gloss, holographic finishes through the use of UV coatings and specialty film
  • Economical alternative to holographic foil stamping
  • Can be more efficient than holographic foil stamping, depending on design (less material and energy usage compared to an off-line foil stamping process)
  • Spot or overall coating options
  • No film or laminate is left on the sheets
  • UV coating process emits no VOCs
  • Casting film is reusable
  • Casting film is recyclable
